Our Story

Boomer Equine Insurance started with a simple idea; if you understand horses, you will understand why it is so important to insure them.

John Rounsefell didn’t so much choose insurance, as grow up in it. His father was an executive at Royal Insurance, his older brother followed suit, and back then, it was pretty common to step into the same profession as your family.

After several years, John moved to London where he worked for Commercial Union’s Subsidiary World Auxiliary Insurance, and later for a Llyod’s broker in the livestock section.

That led him to a role at Elders in 1974, where he became the Bloodstock Insurance Manager. The job took him across the country, insuring cattle and attending bull sales throughout Queensland, as well as managing bloodstock insurance at key events like the Magic Millions. He built a reputation for compliance, commitment and integrity, whether it meant driving to Quilpie on a Sunday or sorting a problem out face-to-face.

In 1991 John took the natural step and started his own business, John Rounsefell Insurance Agencies. With established relationships and adept industry knowledge. Over time, his integrity and experience grew the business, which was heavily supported by referrals and long-standing clients. In 1993, John joined forces with Bob Logan at Logan Livestock Insurance as their Queensland Authorised Representative. Bob had started his insurance career in 1962 and developed a specialisation in horses. Bob died in 2007 and John continued his association at Logans with Bob’s son, Richard. He is proud of his 32-year association with Logans personally looking after his clients and paying out millions of dollars in claims.

Now, after more than five decades, John is officially retiring from day-to-day work, passing the baton to Boomer and watching proudly as the family tradition continues under a new name and the two sons build on an already established strong business relationship.

Boomer grew up immersed in it all; the farms, racehorses and sales. He followed a different path, working throughout the world for leading thoroughbred organisations and eventually building his own, Boomer Bloodstock, buying horses across Australia, Europe, and the United States. He spent years learning what makes a successful racehorse, what makes a sound investment and how to protect that investment.

It is what fuels Boomer’s commitment to offering a full service experience to anyone operating within the thoroughbred industry.

Helen Boyes compliments the team with her experience working as a veterinary nurse within the Scone Equine Group, and her stud management experience working on leading thoroughbred stud farms. She has a grounded view of the day-to-day risks thoroughbred horses face and a firm foundation of veterinary knowledge.  Helen has gone on to be qualified with the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance, ensuring our service reflects industry standards and best practice.

Today, we run Boomer Equine Insurance as a tight, trusted team that you can rely on.
