Why Travel Insurance Matters for Mares on the Move

You’re a breeder and have secured that perfect American mare to add to your band – well done! But before she even sets hoof on Australian soil, there’s one crucial step you don’t want to overlook: insurance.

Importing a mare from the United States to Australia is no small task. From pre-export quarantine to international air travel, post-arrival quarantine, and customs clearance — the journey takes a minimum of 10 weeks and upwards of $30,000 to $40,000 in transport costs alone. With so many moving parts, protecting your investment through tailored bloodstock insurance is an essential part.

Before Departure: Pre-Export Protection

Once the sale is finalised and your mare is cleared to travel, she’ll head to a government-accredited farm in the US to begin a 14-day pre-export quarantine (PEQ).

While many transport agents include basic emergency cover during this period, it typically only applies to surgical intervention within the quarantine facility — not broader loss or mortality cover. That’s where a dedicated insurance policy comes in, ensuring you and your mare are protected.

In Transit: From Tarmac to Touchdown

Once cleared, your mare will board a carefully coordinated international flight, Though the agents and in-flight carers will take every precaution to ensure your horse is in safe hands, it’s important to remember that air travel carries inherent risk. Horses may be unsettled, exposed to stress-related illness, or experience delays beyond your control.

A travel-inclusive bloodstock policy provides peace of mind from the moment your mare steps into the float until she safely exits post-arrival quarantine. This can cover mortality, accident, illness, and in some cases, loss of use should complications arise.

Upon Arrival: Post-Arrival Quarantine and Beyond

Your mare will land in Australia and head directly into another 14-day quarantine. Again, having appropriate insurance cover during this period ensures that any unexpected veterinary costs or health events are accounted for. Once she’s released into your care, her policy can continue to cover her in Australia, depending on the terms agreed.
